Please be aware NHS patients will have to pay NHS patient charges unless they hold a relevant exemption status i.e. Universal credit, Pension credit, receiving Jobseeker's allowance, have an HC2 or HC3 certificate, whether you are pregnant or under the age of 18.   Proof of this is required to be presented at your registration appointment.

Many households in Northern Ireland that are in receipt of certain benefits will begin moving to Universal credit and this will have an effect on exemptions from NHS dental charges.  We understand that these changes can be confusing and there is little guidance online to help with this, so we have outlined some key information below for you.

At present, anyone in receipt of NHS tax credit, income support, or income-based job seekers allowance are exempt from NHS dental charges, however once you are moved to Universal Credit, you will no longer be automatically exempt.

The only benefits/circumstances that are still fully exempt from NHS dental charges are as follows:

* anyone under 18 years of age or;

* anyone aged up to 18 years 11 months but still in full time education

* anyone that is pregnant; or has given birth in the last 12 months

* anyone in receipt of Pension Credit Guarantee

All low-income based households and those in receipt of Universal Credit, PIPs and ESA must complete a HC1 form and if eligible they will be provided with either a HC2 or HC3 certificate showing full or partial exemption from NHS dental charges.  You can get these forms online on the NI Direct website to print out, or collect them from yuot local jobs and benefits office.  Please note it can take several weeks from completion of the form to finiding out if you are eligible for help with your NHS dental charges.

Unfortunately, dental practices cannot check your exemption for you, and it is the patient's responsibility to declare and/or provide proof of exemption from NHS dental charges before you receive any dental treatment.  If you are unable to do this, you must pay privately for any dental treatment you received on the day of your appointment.  if you are unsure whether or not you pay, we are happy to rearrange your appointment.
